For this project, we are exploring the global social values of our classmates. You will be asked to analyze three (3) different variables taken from Pew Research Center’s survey on Global Attitudes and Trends (GAT). For each variable, you will need to compose a detailed statistical report, a frequency distribution, a graph/chart, a central tendency analysis, and a variability analysis. This project emphasizes learning goals and objectives 1, 2, 3, and 7 as listed in the syllabus. Introduction

Understanding global social values is fundamental in a multicultural world. This project aims to employ descriptive statistical methods to analyze data collected from undergraduate students involved in an online social sciences course. By examining three variables related to social values, we can assess patterns, variations, and central trends within the sample, which may reflect broader societal attitudes.

Selection of Variables

The three variables selected from the Pew survey could include attitudes toward democracy, religious tolerance, and views on gender roles—each representing key aspects of societal values. These variables are ordinal or nominal, making them suitable for frequency distributions and visual presentation. The selection should be justified based on relevance to social value research.

Methodology

Data analysis involves importing the provided SPSS file into the statistical software and conducting a series of descriptive statistical procedures. First, frequency distributions for each variable will be generated, providing counts and percentages. Next, bar charts or pie charts will visually illustrate the distribution. To analyze central tendency, measures such as mode and median will be used, especially for ordinal variables. Variability can be assessed through range or interquartile range, providing insight into how diverse the responses are.

Results

The results section will present the frequency tables and corresponding charts for each variable. Descriptive statistics will highlight the most common responses and the spread of data points. For example, if a majority of students support democracy, the frequency table and chart will reflect this trend. Variability analyses will depict the degree of consensus or disagreement among the participants regarding these social issues.

Discussion

The discussion will interpret these statistical findings, comparing the responses for each variable. Notable patterns or deviations from expected trends will be explored, potentially connecting findings to cultural or demographic factors. Limitations such as the convenience sampling method or sample size will be acknowledged. The implications of the results could inform understanding of global youth attitudes and contribute to cross-cultural dialogue.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this descriptive statistical analysis provides a snapshot of the social values held by students in the survey sample. The use of frequency distributions, charts, and measures of central tendency and variability offers a comprehensive view of the data. Future studies could expand on these findings with larger, more representative samples or by conducting inferential statistical tests.
