Psychological disorder research funding is limited, and decisions regarding allocation are often controversial. As chair of the budget committee for a large non-profit organization specializing in mental health research, I must decide how to allocate resources effectively.
I would prioritize funding for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) as the most research-funded disorder. Depression is highly prevalent, with significant impacts on individuals and society, including increased disability and economic costs (World Health Organization, 2020). Advances in understanding the biological, psychological, and social factors contributing to depression can lead to more effective treatments, improving quality of life for many.
Conversely, I would allocate the fewest research dollars to somatic disorders without clear psychological components, such as certain medically unexplained symptoms, unless new evidence suggests targeted and promising interventions. While these disorders are important, their etiologies are often less understood, and research resources may yield limited immediate benefits.
In general, abnormal behavior refers to patterns of emotional disturbance, cognition, or conduct that are deviant, distressing, or maladaptive. For depression, abnormal behavior includes persistent sadness, loss of interest, and changes in appetite or sleep. For other disorders like generalized anxiety disorder, it manifests as excessive worry and physiological symptoms, while schizophrenia involves hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thinking. Each disorder's manifestation highlights the complexity of abnormal behaviors and underscores the importance of tailored research (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
