c) Now consider the following sentences, which illustrate a second metaphor about time: (ii) Time flies when you’re having fun. The time is going by so fast. (iii) We’re approaching the end of the year. The weekend is coming soon. The time for action has arrived. (iv) Don’t look behind, that time is over. That’s all behind us now. How are we talking about time in these sentences? Use the format TIME IS __________ (fill in the blank). In (ii), “Time flies” personifies time as a swift, flying object, evoking a sense of rapid movement. In (iii), “approaching” and “has arrived” depict time as a journey or destination on a continuum, highlighting progression toward an endpoint. In (iv), “over” and “behind” suggest a completed journey or past, positioning time as something that can be passed or left behind.

The differences among these expressions lie in their focus: (ii) underscores speed and the swift passage of enjoyable moments; (iii) emphasizes the progression toward a future occurrence; and (iv) reflects on the past, emphasizing closure and retrospection. All frame time as something that moves or can be experienced as moving, but with different temporal focuses—speed, progression, and conclusion.

Two additional examples fitting these metaphors could be: (for the metaphor in (iii)) “The deadline is approaching rapidly,” emphasizing the swift movement toward a deadline; and (for the metaphor in (iv)) “That chapter is now closed,” indicating the past or completion of an event or period.
