Purpose The most important document you will write for your career is your resume. There is no one universally accepted style or format, but there are some principles that are acceptable in most situations, and we'll emphasize those. Please use the information in the lecture on cover letters and resumes as you prepare the documents.
Context Prepare a resume for a job that you might apply for at the end of this semester. You will thus be using current information on your education and work experience.
The job you apply for should be one that you could reasonably get, based on these. Requirements There are two parts to this assignment. If you turn in one and not the other, you will lose credit for the missing part. Please see the rubric below for the points. The cover letter must be no more than one page.
It must show your current and accurate information except for your address and phone number. You may make these up, if you choose, for privacy. The resume must be one to two pages long. Do not use a template. I'm looking for your own design and writing. Structure and Context I've provided detailed instructions for both the cover letter and the resume in my lecture on these. Follow these, rather than the models in the book.
1. The cover letter must have the following parts: Standard letter parts (return address, inside address, salutation, complimentary close) Introduction, body, and conclusion
2. The resume must have the following parts: Name, home address, phone number, email address, and page number (if more than one page) Objective Education Experience The resume may also include other information: Achievements, Associations, Volunteer Work, etc.

Similarly, a compelling cover letter complements the resume by providing context and a narrative about your interest in the position and the organization. It should follow standard letter formatting, including a return address, inside address, salutation, introduction, body, and conclusion. The introductory paragraph should briefly introduce yourself and state the purpose of the letter. The body should expand on your qualifications, linking your skills and experiences to the specific demands of the job. The conclusion should reaffirm your interest and include a call to action for further contact or interview opportunities.
Effective editing is equally important to ensure error-free documents. Even minor grammatical or typographical errors can undermine professionalism. Candidates should proofread their resumes and cover letters meticulously, or seek peer review, to eliminate mistakes and ensure clarity. Attention to detail not only reflects professionalism but also respect for the prospective employer's time.
Today’s job seekers are encouraged to develop tailored, authentic, and visually appealing resumes and cover letters that effectively communicate their value. Incorporating keywords from the job description can also improve the chances of passing Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) used by many employers. Ultimately, these documents serve as the foundation for establishing a strong first impression and opening doors to interview opportunities that advance one's career goals.
