However, it raises significant technical concerns, including potential ground and groundwater contamination, the long-term stability of waste containment, and the difficulty in predicting the environmental behavior of hazardous substances over extended periods. The risk of leaks, accidental releases, or structural failures poses substantial threats to surrounding ecosystems and public health. Therefore, technical considerations must focus on ensuring engineered liners to prevent leachate migration, effective containment systems, and ongoing monitoring to detect early signs of failure.
Despite these concerns, land disposal remains a contentious option. The primary alternative is waste treatment and destruction through methods such as incineration, chemical neutralization, or stabilization, which often reduce toxicity and volume. Among these, incineration can effectively eliminate hazardous organic compounds, thereby significantly reducing environmental risks associated with land disposal. Additionally, advances in waste stabilization techniques aim to convert hazardous waste into inert forms, minimizing leaching potential. These alternatives often provide better protection for ecosystems and human health, but they may involve higher costs, technical complexity, or energy consumption.
In my opinion, land disposal should only be permissible when combined with rigorous engineering controls and comprehensive monitoring, and only as a temporary or complementary solution. Given the long-term environmental risks and technical challenges, prioritizing waste treatment methods that eradicate or neutralize hazards is preferable. These alternatives offer advantages such as reduced groundwater contamination risk, better long-term environmental safety, and compliance with stricter regulatory standards. As technology advances, reliance on treated or stabilized waste forms should replace land disposal as the primary management strategy, aligning with sustainable and environmentally responsible practices (Gore et al., 2018).
