This reflective essay explores the formation of my understanding of race and ethnicity, examining influential messages received from authority figures, media, and personal experiences with racism and stereotyping. The purpose is to critically analyze how these influences have shaped my perceptions and attitudes towards racial and ethnic differences, and to reflect on my evolving identity concerning these issues.
My earliest memories of racial and ethnic differences date back to childhood, where I first became aware of distinct physical appearances, languages, traditions, and cultural practices that distinguished various groups. Growing up in a multicultural neighborhood, I encountered diverse racial and ethnic identities that prompted initial curiosity and questions about differences. These early impressions were often shaped by family discussions, community interactions, and media portrayals.
My parents, as primary authority figures, played a significant role in transmitting messages about race and ethnicity. Their beliefs, whether explicit or implicit, influenced how I perceived others. For example, my father often emphasized the importance of respecting all races but also made statements that subtly reinforced stereotypes. My mother, on the other hand, instilled values of equality and compassion but occasionally used stereotypes in humorous or dismissive ways, which I later recognized as problematic.
