Reading Assignments The next several weeks (March 23- April 10, approximately) we will revisit the genre of poetry with our ultimate goal being to produce an 'explication' paper
The next several weeks (March 23 - April 10) will focus on revisiting the genre of poetry with the goal of producing an explication paper. Students are instructed to read the specified assignments, choose a poem from "Poems for Further Reading" that moves or engages them in an important way, and explain their attraction to the poem in a discussion board post. The chosen poem should be new and fresh to the student, not one that has been extensively analyzed before, such as Frost's "Snowy Evening" or "The Road Less Traveled."
Students are required to read discussion responses from two classmates, comment on their poem choices, and include the textbook page number and title of the poem in the discussion thread. They will analyze their poem using a provided checklist, and this analysis will prepare them for writing a final explication paper demonstrating their skills.
The assignment emphasizes thoughtful engagement, originality, respectful discussion, and careful use of the tools provided in the textbook. There will be support materials, including screencasts and guidelines, to assist in analyzing the poem and constructing the final paper.
Paper For Above instruction
In this assignment, students will engage deeply with poetry by selecting a poem that resonates personally, analyzing it thoroughly using tools and checklists provided, and ultimately composing an explication paper that demonstrates their understanding and interpretive skills. This process encourages close reading, critical thinking, and expressive writing, leading to a richer appreciation of poetic craft and meaning. By exploring new poets and themes, students expand their literary horizons and develop their analytical voice within poetic analysis.
