Students are expected to move beyond the simple observations of a reader response in order to grapple with the texts analytically and argue for or against specific claims and evidence in 500 words or more. Choose one of the following 2 options in organizing your Reading Review, and specify your choice clearly in your heading , noting that each option must be chosen at least twice during the quarter. The options are: Option 1- Summary: Write one short paragraph on each reading, identifying its site, perspective, argument, data (if any), evidence, methods, and claims. Option 2- - Compare & Contrast: Select two or more similar readings and compare and contrast their approaches to the same problems, issues, and objects of study.

There are two organizational options for constructing the reading review:

Option 1: Summary

This approach involves writing a succinct paragraph for each reading. Each paragraph should identify key aspects such as the site or context of the work, the perspective or theoretical lens used, the main argument or thesis, any relevant data or evidence employed, the methods of inquiry, and the claims made by the author. This option emphasizes clarity in distilling the core components of each text.

Option 2: Compare & Contrast

Alternatively, students may opt to compare and contrast two or more readings that tackle similar themes, issues, or objects of study. This method requires analyzing how each author approaches the topic, highlighting similarities and differences in methodology, argumentation, perspective, evidence, and conclusions. This comparative analysis demonstrates an understanding of different scholarly approaches and encourages critical engagement with the material.

Students are expected to specify clearly in their submission which organizational option they have chosen, and each option should be selected at least twice across the course. This flexibility allows for varied analytical approaches and deepens engagement with the readings.

To succeed, students should focus on developing well-reasoned arguments, substantiated with evidence pulled from the readings, and situate their critique within broader scholarly conversations. The assignment fosters skills in analytical reading, synthesis, and academic writing, vital for advanced scholarly work.
