Ethical and moral reasoning are fundamental aspects of personal development, academic pursuits, and professional careers. To be ethical encompasses acting in accordance with moral principles that promote fairness, honesty, responsibility, and respect for others. These principles guide an individual’s behavior across various contexts, fostering trust and integrity within communities and institutions (Becker & Murphy, 2017). From a personal perspective, being ethical involves making choices aligned with one's moral values, often influenced by individual experiences and societal norms. Academically, ethical behavior manifests in honesty in coursework, respect for intellectual property, and fairness in collaboration. Professionally, ethics are articulated through codes of conduct meant to ensure responsible practices and uphold the reputation of the organization (Fourie & Roux, 2020).

A significant ethical dilemma I encountered involved witnessing a peer plagiarize content for an assignment. Faced with the dilemma of either remaining silent or reporting the misconduct, I chose to report the incident to the instructor. The situation was resolved through an honest discussion about academic integrity, which led to appropriate consequences for the peer and reinforced the importance of honesty in academic work (Lefebvre, 2018). This experience underscored the importance of ethical principles and reinforced my commitment to maintaining integrity in all areas of life.

My general education courses, particularly those in ethics, philosophy, and communication, have significantly shaped my ethical understanding. Engaging with diverse perspectives and theoretical frameworks exposed me to different moral viewpoints, enhancing my critical thinking and moral reasoning skills (Johnson, 2019). For instance, courses on ethical theories such as utilitarianism and deontology helped me understand the importance of considering the greater good and the moral duties we hold towards others.

Furthermore, a college-educated individual often has different duties to society than someone with less formal education. Higher education broadens one's understanding of societal issues, fosters critical thinking, and instills values of civic responsibility (Walker, 2021). Educated individuals are generally better equipped to participate in public discourse, advocate for justice, and contribute to societal well-being. Consequently, they may face a greater ethical obligation to leverage their knowledge and skills for societal benefit, recognizing their role in promoting positive social change (Whitehead & Hensley, 2020).
