Patient safety is a cornerstone of high-quality healthcare, aiming to prevent harm to patients during the delivery of medical services. Implementing effective patient safety measures not only enhances the quality of care but also results in significant cost savings for healthcare organizations. These measures reduce the incidence of medical errors, hospital-acquired infections, readmissions, and adverse events, which are often expensive to treat and can lead to prolonged hospital stays (Dennis et al., 2019). For example, adherence to proper hand hygiene protocols and standardized procedures minimizes infection rates, decreasing the need for additional treatments and associated costs. Moreover, safeguarding patient safety reduces legal liabilities and penalties linked to medical malpractice, thereby lowering overall healthcare expenses (Choo et al., 2020). Consequently, investing in patient safety initiatives yields a favorable return on investment by balancing high-quality care with economic efficiency.

The Joint Commission plays a vital role in healthcare by establishing national standards for patient safety and quality. As a non-profit organization, it accredits and certifies healthcare organizations, including hospitals, nursing homes, and outpatient clinics. The Joint Commission develops performance standards based on evidence-based practices and conducts regular evaluations to ensure compliance. Its mission is to improve healthcare quality and patient safety by promoting continuous improvement, encouraging organizations to implement safety protocols, and fostering a culture of transparency and accountability (The Joint Commission, 2021). Accreditation by the Joint Commission is a mark of excellence and assures patients and providers that the organization adheres to rigorous safety and quality standards.

As a future registered nurse, I see my role in healthcare as a proactive advocate for patient safety. I will prioritize evidence-based practices, encourage open communication among team members, and remain vigilant for potential safety risks. Continuous education and staying updated with the latest safety protocols are essential for effective practice. Additionally, I plan to foster a culture of safety within my team by reporting errors without fear of retribution and participating in quality improvement initiatives. My commitment to patient-centered care will ensure that safety remains a fundamental aspect of my nursing practice, ultimately enhancing patient satisfaction and outcomes (McCarthy & Nightingale, 2020).

The chief nursing officer (CNO) plays a strategic role in ensuring patient safety at the organizational level. The CNO is responsible for developing and implementing policies that promote safety, overseeing staff education on safety protocols, and promoting a culture that prioritizes safety at all levels. The CNO also collaborates with other healthcare leaders to allocate resources toward safety initiatives, monitor safety performance metrics, and respond to safety breaches or concerns promptly. By providing strong leadership and advocating for continuous safety improvements, the CNO helps integrate safety into the organization's core values and practices (Sullivan et al., 2018). Their leadership is crucial in fostering an environment where every team member feels responsible for patient safety and actively participates in safety efforts.
