However, despite nurses being among the most trusted professionals with the potential to influence policy, their participation in advocacy remains limited. To bridge this gap, it is vital to focus on expanding advocacy education and fostering leadership within nursing organizations (Chiu, Cummings, Thorne, & Schick-Makaroff, 2021).
Developing targeted training programs can empower nurses with the necessary skills, including understanding legislative processes, lobbying techniques, and ethical considerations in advocacy. Moreover, fostering a culture of advocacy within nursing leadership can inspire more practitioners to recognize their influence and responsibility in policy-making. This strategic shift aligns with evidence indicating that when nurses are actively involved in policy development, outcomes such as improved staffing ratios, workplace safety, and patient safety are more achievable (Rasheed, Younas, & Mehdi, 2020).
Further, legislation like the Lobbying Disclosure Act offers guidelines that nurses and organizations can adhere to when engaging in lobbying activities, ensuring transparency and ethical advocacy. Encouraging nurses to participate as policy advocates and leaders can enhance their visibility and influence in healthcare reform, ultimately leading to a more resilient and equitable health system (Mason et al., 2020). Strengthening these advocacy capacities is essential for advancing nursing’s role in shaping health policy and improving public health outcomes.
