Report on MTSU Belonging: Exploring Opportunities for International Students
Introduction
Developing a sense of belonging is essential for students to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally during their time at university. For international students, particularly, establishing this connection can be both challenging and rewarding. Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) offers various resources, organizations, and events designed to foster community and inclusion. This report explores three different sections related to belonging at MTSU, identifies categories within each, and examines examples to understand how these opportunities support students' sense of community. Additionally, two categories will be analyzed in more detail to highlight their role in enhancing belonging outside the classroom.
Methods
To gather information on the sense of belonging at MTSU, multiple sources from the university's official website were reviewed. Three web pages were examined: one outlining the university’s statements on belonging and inclusion; another listing student organizations and clubs; and a third detailing campus events and activities. Categories within these sections were identified based on recurring themes and types of activities. My selection of categories and examples was guided by their relevance to international students’ integration and opportunities for social engagement outside academics. Personal experiences and observations as an international student contributed to understanding how these resources influence belonging.
MTSU’s Statements on Belonging
MTSU emphasizes fostering an inclusive campus environment where every student feels valued and connected. The university’s official statements highlight commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), recognizing that a supportive community enhances student success. For example, the institution’s Diversity and Inclusion webpage states that MTSU aims to create a campus where cultural understanding and mutual respect thrive, facilitating students' overall well-being. Furthermore, the Mission of the Office of Student Affairs emphasizes that creating a sense of belonging is integral to academic achievement and personal development. These statements underscore that the university considers belonging a core aspect of its educational philosophy.
MTSU’s Lists of Events and Organizations
Campus Cultural Events
MTSU hosts numerous cultural festivals, international days, and themed celebrations promoting diversity. Examples include International Student Day, Black History Month events, and Multicultural Week, where students share traditions through dance, food, and storytelling. These events foster intercultural understanding and belonging by highlighting different backgrounds.
Student Organizations and Clubs
The university provides diverse organizations such as the International Student Association, Multicultural Student Organization, and various affinity groups based on ethnicity, religion, or interests. These organizations help students connect with peers sharing similar backgrounds or interests, creating a support network and a sense of community.
Academic and Leadership Development Programs
MTSU offers programs like the Honors College, leadership workshops, and tutoring centers. These opportunities encourage student engagement, skill development, and social interaction, contributing positively to belonging and confidence on campus.
Selection of Categories and Examples
The categories chosen—cultural events, student organizations, and development programs—were selected because they encompass broad avenues through which students connect and build community. Examples such as International Student Day and the International Student Association represent active efforts to promote inclusivity and cultural exchange. Their relevance to international students, like myself, makes them key focal points for understanding how MTSU supports belonging beyond academic work.
Personal Experience
As an international student at MTSU, participating in the International Student Association significantly enhanced my sense of belonging. Attending cultural festivals allowed me to share my heritage while learning about others. Participating in leadership workshops helped me develop confidence and establish a network of friends and mentors. These experiences demonstrated how university-sponsored activities can ease the transition to campus life, fostering inclusiveness and personal growth.
Results
MTSU’s webpages articulate that opportunities to develop belonging extend beyond academics to include various student organizations, cultural events, and special programs. These avenues promote intercultural understanding, social integration, and emotional support. For example, the university encourages participation in multicultural celebrations and affinity groups, which are designed not only for social engagement but also for personal empowerment and leadership development.
Three categories of organizations and events—cultural festivals, student clubs, and leadership activities—offer students diverse ways to connect. Cultural festivals like International Day showcase diverse traditions, while organizations such as the International Student Association serve as platforms for peer support. Leadership programs foster a sense of purpose and community involvement, further solidifying belonging.
Focusing on one specific example, the International Festival held annually at MTSU features food, music, and dance from around the world. It provides a lively environment where students, faculty, and community members interact, share stories, and celebrate diversity. Attending this festival enabled me to connect with students from various countries, forging friendships and understanding that continue to enrich my campus experience. Additionally, my involvement with the International Student Association has provided ongoing support, cultural exchange, and opportunities for leadership that deeply contribute to my feeling of inclusion.
Other organizations and events I've participated in include on-campus cultural nights, peer mentoring programs, and off-campus community service projects. These activities have helped me build a broader social network, learn about American culture, and feel more integrated into the university community.
Discussion of Results
The analysis confirms that MTSU offers comprehensive opportunities for students, especially international students, to foster a sense of belonging outside the classroom. Engaging in cultural festivals, joining student organizations, and participating in leadership programs have all been instrumental in creating a supportive community. These experiences not only facilitate social integration but also promote cross-cultural understanding, which is vital for international students adjusting to a new environment.
The university’s focus on inclusivity and diversity creates an environment where students can express their identities and feel valued. Participation in campus events and organizations leads to increased confidence, leadership skills, and lifelong friendships. As an international student, I can personally attest to the significance of these opportunities in making the campus feel like home, encouraging continued involvement and personal development.
Moreover, the university’s intentional promotion of intercultural activities assures that students from diverse backgrounds can find their place. This deliberate strategy enhances the overall campus climate, making MTSU a welcoming environment for all students, regardless of their origin.
