For this paper, I have selected the issue of criminal justice reform, an area of significant concern given recent debates around sentencing, incarceration rates, and rehabilitation programs in Texas. My interest in this issue stems from the high number of inmates in Texas prisons and the social and economic impacts associated with the current system. I believe that policy adjustments aimed at reducing mandatory minimum sentences and expanding rehabilitative services are crucial for creating a fairer and more effective justice system.

Research indicates that criminal justice reform has periodically come before the Texas Legislature. For example, in 2019, bills were introduced to reduce recidivism and promote alternative sentencing measures. However, progress has been slow, often hindered by political resistance and public misconceptions about crime and safety. The fact that reform bills periodically surface suggests ongoing awareness, but barriers such as entrenched interests, political priorities, or partisan disagreements may prevent comprehensive reform. In some cases, issues such as budget constraints or public safety concerns overshadow reform efforts, leading to delays or rejection of proposed changes.

For my communication, I have chosen to contact State Representative Susan Lopez, representing District 123.
