The development of my research topic has progressed significantly as I have moved from a broad interest in pediatric healthcare to a more focused examination of the interactions and perceptions of healthcare professionals with children diagnosed with medical complexity (CMC). Initially, my prospectus aimed to explore general communication strategies in pediatric healthcare settings; however, as I delved deeper, I recognized the importance of understanding the specific dynamics involved in caring for children with complex medical needs. This shift was driven by a desire to generate insights that could inform training and policy improvements, ultimately enhancing care quality for this vulnerable population.

The transition from my prospectus to the current research problem reflects an evolution grounded in preliminary literature reviews and reflective analysis of current clinical practices. My initial research question centered on how healthcare professionals communicate with pediatric patients broadly. However, I refined this to investigate how perceptions—beliefs, attitudes, and biases—affect interactions with children with medical complexity. Throughout this process, I encountered several obstacles, primarily related to the limited scope of existing qualitative studies focusing specifically on children with medical complexity. Most available research emphasizes family-centered care or health outcomes rather than detailed interactions from healthcare providers' perspectives. Additionally, gaining familiarity with qualitative research methods specific to this area requires deeper exploration. These challenges highlight the necessity for more targeted literature review and possibly conducting pilot qualitative studies or interviews to enrich my understanding.

Looking ahead, my next steps involve conducting comprehensive literature reviews focused on qualitative studies where healthcare professionals' perceptions and interactions are analyzed within pediatric contexts. This will help identify theoretical frameworks and methodological approaches suitable for my research. Additionally, I plan to develop interview guides or survey tools tailored to gather nuanced insights into healthcare providers’ attitudes and experiences with children who have complex health needs. These tools will facilitate data collection in a manner that captures the depth and complexity of clinical interactions.

Furthermore, I intend to explore interdisciplinary perspectives, integrating nursing, psychology, and pediatric medicine literature to build a robust foundation for my research approach. Deciding whether to employ phenomenological, ethnographic, or grounded theory methods will depend on the insights gained during these preliminary investigations. My ultimate goal is to design a research approach that not only addresses my research questions but also aligns with ethical considerations and practical constraints within pediatric healthcare settings.
