During this class and the previous, I had the unique opportunity to be involved in a project both virtually and physically. Within my professional organization, we implemented a fast-track process, and I continue to monitor its success and hold staff accountable for sustaining change. This experience allowed me to operate at a high level as the project manager virtually, creating a Gantt chart and displaying it prominently in my office, which was seen by many colleagues. This involvement enhanced my ability to speak more confidently and intelligently about project management and sustaining organizational change, thus increasing my value within my organization.
Interestingly, my director asked if I would consider using fish-bone diagrams (Ishikawa diagrams) to explore potential improvements on the back-end of emergency department throughput, as the front-end metrics had shown improvement. I expressed interest and willingness to collaborate, explaining that the current problems might evolve due to the ongoing pandemic. With COVID-19, large portions of our progressive care unit (PCU) and intensive care unit (ICU) beds have been repurposed for COVID-19 patients, and all admitted patients are tested prior to admission or procedures. Our COVID-19 tents remain operational, and we are currently holding many non-COVID positive patients, which reflects a shift from just a few weeks prior when we primarily held COVID-positive patients.
