The most important role in my opinion that a project manager has is to carefully plan. As the author of our text states “the project manager leads the planning, executing, and closing of a project” (Kloppenborg, 2014). I chose planning as the most important role because organization and effective planning are crucial in executing a project successfully. An organized plan allows for clear delineation of tasks and proper resource allocation, which are essential for meeting project deadlines and objectives. Time management plays a vital role in this process, as it helps ensure that each phase of the project progresses smoothly and stays within set timelines.
In my opinion, the role of project manager will not change over time because careful planning remains a fundamental aspect of project success regardless of technological or methodological advances. Project managers typically select projects based on strategic planning, aligning projects with organizational goals. Usually, sponsors are responsible for selecting projects and prioritizing them according to their importance (Kloppenborg, 2014). While sponsors play a significant role in project initiation, project managers oversee the execution and ensure that the project aligns with the strategic objectives set forth at the outset. Furthermore, sponsors are expected to mentor project managers to facilitate project completion and address any challenges that arise during the project lifecycle.
In conclusion, effective planning and clear communication between sponsors and project managers are essential for successful project delivery. The core responsibilities of a project manager—planning, organizing, leading, and controlling—have remained largely consistent over time because they are fundamental to project success. As project environments evolve, these roles adapt but remain rooted in strategic planning and diligent execution, highlighting the enduring importance of careful pre-project planning for achieving desired outcomes.
