My internship at Meridian Rapid Defense Group Company provided a valuable platform for applying academic concepts in a practical work environment, allowing me to develop both technical and interpersonal skills crucial for my professional growth. Throughout the internship, I acquired significant technical skills, including designing, implementing, and repairing security software and hardware, which bridged the gap between classroom knowledge and real-world application. While my engineering coursework provided a solid theoretical foundation, the internship exposed me to workplace procedures and processes, emphasizing the importance of adaptive problem-solving and hands-on experience in the tech industry. Under the supervision of experienced professionals, I enhanced my confidence and competence in security systems, positioning myself for future roles in cybersecurity and engineering management.
Teamwork was another critical aspect of my internship experience. Working with both interns and seasoned engineers, I learned about collaborative dynamics, including trust, respect, conflict resolution, commitment, and shared objectives. The development of communication skills, emotional intelligence, and effective conflict management are vital competencies that I plan to continue cultivating. As Alshehri (2019) emphasizes, these skills are fundamental to working effectively within diverse teams, especially as workplaces become more culturally varied.
Cultural competence was strengthened during my internship through interactions with colleagues from diverse backgrounds. This exposure enhanced my appreciation of cultural differences and improved my ability to communicate across cultural boundaries. Lamb, Maire, and Doecke (2017) highlight that cultural competence fosters effective team interactions and enhances organizational functioning. Gaining this skill will be instrumental as I work with multicultural teams and interact with diverse clients, thus improving my interpersonal effectiveness and increasing cultural sensitivity in my professional journey.
Leadership development was a prominent component of my experience. Observing my supervisor’s transformational leadership style fostered my understanding of empowering and motivating team members. Jiang, Zhao, and Ni (2017) describe transformational leadership’s core elements—such as inspirational motivation and intellectual stimulation—which I observed in action. These insights motivated me to develop my leadership skills, with aspirations to assume managerial roles in the future. Recognizing the importance of leading by example and supporting team members has provided clarity on how to foster positive and productive work environments.
Personal growth was also a significant aspect of my internship, notably in recognizing areas for improvement. I discovered a tendency toward anger, which at times affected my interactions negatively. Acknowledging this, I committed to learning anger management techniques to improve my emotional regulation, improve my relationships with colleagues, and foster a more respectful and collaborative workplace. This self-awareness is critical for personal development and aligns with the broader goal of becoming an effective leader with emotional intelligence.
My future career aspirations include becoming a Security Analyst and eventually an Engineering Manager. As a Security Analyst, I aim to focus on security audits, threat assessment, vulnerability management, and applying security risk management tools. Progressing to an Engineering Manager will require continuous professional development, staying updated on technological trends, and developing strategic leadership skills. My internship experience has reinforced these goals and provided practical insights into the skills needed to succeed in these roles.
In conclusion, the internship at Meridian Rapid Defense Group was instrumental in translating academic learning into workplace competence. It highlighted the importance of technical proficiency, teamwork, cultural competence, leadership, and emotional regulation. These experiences have shaped my professional identity and clarified my future career goals. I am motivated to continue building these skills to contribute meaningfully to the cybersecurity and engineering fields, ultimately aspiring to leadership positions that allow me to influence organizational culture positively.
