Surname 1 Name: Professor: Course Title: Date: Immigration a Necessary ‘Evil’ Immigration now more than ever has been on the rise and in fact in the last forty years, immigration has been a demographic shift historically. More so, we can relate with the issue of immigration since it is the belief that America is a product of immigration. Though the issue of immigration has received mixed reaction from different people, technically, everyone in America is affected by immigration either directly or indirectly. Whether due to the large population of immigrants in the country or the jobs immigrants have secured in the country, immigration influences America greatly. Immigration has influenced the growth and development of America`s economy contrary to the perception of the critics of immigration.
America also referred to as a nation of immigrants is a land that has been founded, and it’s very own people that love it. In this view, America can be viewed as the land of opportunity and attracts attention from across the globe. Individuals strive to get a share of the opportunities in this land for the good of their families, which has contributed to the rise in immigration. Immigration has in many ways influenced America, furthermore, the English language that is the formal language of the land is of German origin. Immigration and its influence to the American culture, therefore, can be traced far back in history.
It would, therefore, be the reason America is termed as the land of immigrants since a large portion of its population is made up of immigrants (Huntington, 467). Subsequently, it is observed that most of the individuals in the country have a German, Asian or other ancestral origins. Immigration has contributed to the diversity that the American community enjoys in the modern day. The diversity of cultures and customs contribute to the rich American customs making it more special than other cultures and contributes to the modernization of the country. Besides the contribution to the American culture, immigration has led to the introduction of the skilled and experienced workforce (Jacoby, 422).
Most of the immigrants come from developing countries and are motivated to work due to the poor living conditions in the countries. In fact, the motivation among most immigrants is to secure a sustainable job since they are not entitled to benefits. Also, the level of entrepreneurship for most of the immigrants is astonishing from the first, second generation even beyond. It is recorded that the Asian and Latino business startup rate stands at four times higher than the average American. Statistics show that the business startups among the immigrants is at a high level than that of the average American (Jacoby, 420).
The effect is that it indicates the enthusiasm among most of the immigrants as goal oriented towards earning a decent living. It is inevitable therefore to realize that as business contributes to the growth of an economy, immigrants contribute to the American economy. Also, businesses contribute to the revenue of the government, with a higher rate of business startup among immigrants, it is evident that immigrants are not only dependent but beneficial to the economy as well. In addition to just assimilating in the society, the immigrants in some regions are taking over but in good faith of development. The greatest problem among most Americans, however, is the perceptions about Immigrants by viewing them as labor workers (Jacoby, 419).
On the contrary, statistics indicates that most of the immigrants arrive in the country with an equivalent of college level degrees. 60 percent of the immigrants from India have completed four years of college. Hence, assuming immigrants are uneducated is cunning to the immigrant community. Immigrant currently in the country earn a decent living for themselves and their families by working equally at both the top and bottom positions in their professions (Jacoby, 423). Hence positive contribution of the immigrants cannot be ignored.
Consequently, history has proved that immigrants have made a positive contribution to the economy of America. A good example is Albert Einstein, who is a world-renowned physicist, was an immigrant in America. Einstein is known for his innovations that contributed to the development even in the modern day, but Einstein was an immigrant from Germany. Another famous immigrant that brought glory to America is Joseph Putilizer who formed Hungary. Joseph, however, became one of the most reputed writers of his time.
These are just but a few of the immigrants who have brought glory to America, but there are some other immigrants who have excelled exemplarily in their field. One of the reasons behind the cutting off immigration population in America is the belief that they threaten the economy. The natives are worried based on the volumes of research that is directed towards claims of the immigrants taking the jobs, failing to learn English as well as assimilate (Jacoby, 423). Also, it is the belief that the immigrants also threaten employment by increasing unemployment. This is backed by research that some immigrants are entitled to the low-income jobs that the natives reject and remain the same way for a long time.
Hence the general view that the immigrants create competition in the well-paying jobs. The stereotype of the immigrants as much as it may sound true is just a bunch of lies that make the community look bad in the eyes of the government. The fact is that the reason these perception comes up is the misconception that surrounds legal and illegal immigration. Illegal immigration in the country has tarnished the good reputation immigrants have and risks the opportunities of people benefiting from legal immigration. Regarding employment, the aggressive nature of the immigrants leads them to take jobs that even the natives are not willing to take (Jacoby 419).
It is more beneficial to keep the open door policy and create an opportunity for other contribute to achieving the American dream. Immigration has contributed greatly to the diversity of culture of the American nation (Huntington, 425). Hence, limiting immigration in the country limits the benefits that accrue from having the diverse cultures. The diverse culture contributes to individuals learning from each other and through this interaction, national harmony, and integration achieved. The open policy that supports immigration would limit the achievement of the American dream.
Personally, immigration through the open policy has contributed to the achievements and general life as the American citizen. Therefore, if immigration was illegal in America, most probably I would not have made it this far. Also, possibly my parents and maybe the grandparents would not be in America. Also nearly, half or even more of the job opportunities that the immigrants have created would not be available. Though most people have lost the essence of immigration due to the fear of increased competition that immigration has created, immigration has a positive contribution.
Immigration increases the variety of cultures and customs in the country. There is a number of reasons that supports immigration, but the outstanding is that in one way or another, everyone is an immigrant. That is, either in the current or later generations, hence, everyone should respect immigrants and immigration since if you are not an immigrant then immigration affects you.
