As an aspiring educator committed to fostering inclusive and effective learning environments, I am motivated to pursue a graduate degree in secondary education to deepen my pedagogical skills and enhance my capacity to serve diverse student populations. My motivation stems from a desire to impact students’ lives positively and to continually improve my teaching practices through advanced knowledge and reflective growth. According to Smith (2020), professional development fosters critical self-awareness and adaptability, essential qualities for educators aiming to meet the evolving needs of students.

The journey toward obtaining and maintaining an English Language Arts (ELA) licensure in Mississippi involves fulfilling several requirements set by the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE). Undergraduate coursework must include a comprehensive core curriculum with courses in literature, writing, and language arts, totaling at least 24 semester hours (Mississippi Department of Education, 2023). Additionally, candidates are required to complete a minimum of 30 hours of observation and student teaching in secondary classrooms to gain practical experience. To demonstrate competency, prospective teachers must pass the Praxis II exams in English: Content Knowledge. Continuing professional development is ongoing; teachers are encouraged to participate in workshops and seminars aligned with state standards to maintain licensure (Mississippi Department of Education, 2023).

Promoting ethical practice is fundamental in my approach to teaching. I am committed to ongoing reflection and accessing resources related to potential biases, including cultural, ethnic, gender, and learning differences. Furthermore, the Interstate Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (InTASC) standards advocate for understanding and addressing biases to create equitable learning environments. By incorporating culturally responsive teaching strategies, I aim to build stronger relationships with students and foster a classroom environment rooted in mutual respect and understanding.

My leadership, collaboration, and technology goals are aligned with national standards such as ISTE and InTASC. I aim to develop as a leader by engaging in collaborative planning with colleagues, integrating technology to enhance learning, and embracing challenges as opportunities for growth. ISTE standards emphasize empowering students through innovative technologies, while InTASC standards advocate for continuous professional improvement and collaboration (International Society for Technology in Education, 2017; InTASC, 2020). For instance, I plan to implement project-based learning that leverages digital tools to foster critical thinking and creative problem-solving. Additionally, I recognize the importance of staying adaptable and open to new pedagogical approaches to meet the dynamic needs of today’s learners.

My expectations of the teaching profession include maintaining high ethical standards, demonstrating resilience, fostering student engagement, and continuously seeking professional growth. After conversations with experienced teachers, I have learned that perseverance and reflective practice are key qualities of successful educators.
