Self Reflection Paper when I First Started This Class

When I first started this class, I believed that I already knew the material and thought it would be an easy experience. However, throughout the course, I gained valuable skills and knowledge that are applicable to my professional growth. The most impactful concepts for me were becoming an effective listener, developing compelling resumes and cover letters, composing professional business emails, and delivering negative news tactfully. These concepts have been practically applied in my workplace, enhancing my communication skills and overall professionalism. I learned to identify barriers to effective listening such as holding biases, faking attention, and the urge to speak before truly understanding others. Recognizing these barriers has helped me improve my active listening, especially as a personal banker, where understanding clients' needs is crucial. I also learned the importance of customizing resumes and cover letters to specific job opportunities, which has opened more career possibilities. Additionally, I improved my email communication skills, making my messages clearer, more concise, and professional. Most notably, I developed strategies for delivering negative news, an often challenging aspect of my industry, by using indirect approaches and offering alternatives to maintain strong client relationships. These skills have not only increased my effectiveness at work but have also contributed to my personal growth. I intend to continually reference and apply this knowledge as I advance professionally.

Paper For Above instruction

The initial in-class videos provided numerous insights into effective communication, self-development, and professional growth. Each video focused on different aspects that contribute to personal and career success, reinforcing the importance of continual learning and self-awareness in a professional setting.

The first video emphasized the importance of effective listening skills. It highlighted how barriers such as preconceived notions, distraction, and the desire to respond prematurely impair our ability to truly hear and understand others. The video stressed that active listening enhances relationships, promotes understanding, and fosters trust. As I reflect on this, I recognize that my own challenges with listening—like pretending to listen or waiting for my turn to speak—have hindered my effectiveness at work and in personal relationships. This visual reinforced the need to cultivate patience, open-mindedness, and genuine engagement, which I have actively tried to improve since viewing.

The second video centered around resume and cover letter development. It pointed out the significance of tailoring application materials to specific job descriptions, emphasizing that generic resumes may limit opportunities. The video provided helpful tips on highlighting relevant skills and accomplishments that match the employer’s needs. Watching this pushed me to revisit my own job applications and realize there were areas for improvement. Since then, I have learned to customize my resumes and cover letters, which has increased my success rate in securing interviews. This reinforced the value of strategic self-presentation and continuous updating of career documents to stay competitive in the job market.

The third video discussed effective business email communication. It demonstrated how clarity, professionalism, and brevity are essential in workplace correspondence. The video explained how to structure emails properly, including subject lines, greeting, body, and closing statements, which ensures the message's purpose is understood. It also covered the importance of tone and etiquette, especially when requesting information or conveying sensitive issues. As a result of this learning, I now compose more concise and professional emails that facilitate better understanding and quicker responses, saving time and reducing misunderstandings at work. This is particularly important when relaying complex or negative information, which can be challenging to communicate effectively.

The fourth video focused on techniques to deliver negative news effectively. It emphasized the importance of empathy, honesty, and tact when informing clients or colleagues of unfavorable outcomes. Using indirect language and offering solutions or alternatives can help soften the impact and preserve relationships. I found this segment extremely relevant as a personal banker, where declining approval or informing clients of unfavorable results is common. Applying these strategies has helped me communicate bad news more diplomatically, maintaining customer trust and engagement even in difficult situations. Overall, this video underscored that the way negative information is delivered can significantly influence the outcome and ongoing relationship.

In summary, these videos collectively offered practical advice on vital communication skills and personal development. They underscored the importance of self-awareness, customization, professionalism, and empathy—all skills I have begun to implement more intentionally in my daily interactions. As I advance in my career, I am confident that these lessons will continue to shape my approach to communication, problem-solving, and professional growth, ultimately leading to greater success and stronger relationships in my industry.
