Instruction: The standard format for this response is as follows: a. Introductory paragraph(s) working up to a thesis statement.

Your thesis statement -- the central idea or the topic in a sentence or two, carries your essay (as much as the paragraphs beyond the introductory one(s) have to elaborately explain the points of your thesis statement ). Your introductory paragraph(s) create the background and context that contribute to and prepare the readers for your thesis statement . So, your introductory paragraph(s) usually culminate in your thesis statement . Please underline your thesis statement presented at the end of your introductory paragraph(s).

b. Subsequent body paragraphs for expanding the points of the thesis .

One body paragraph may develop one point. As you venture to organize a certain body paragraph with a view to developing a point of the thesis statement , you do so by offering a topic sentence stating the general rationale of a point—the rest of a given body paragraph elaborates the general rationale by providing specific evidence and viable explanation .

c. Concluding paragraph(s). Your conclusion sums up your essay, and then makes the final remark in terms of appeal, opinion, statement and such. The evaluation of your essay follows the criteria such as: a. original insight, b. formation of a thesis, c. reference to the text, d analysis, e. coherence and relevance, f. organization, g. length ( at least two full ).

Identical and plagiarized “answers” are automatically discarded and penalized. Your response may be examined holistically. Attempt one of the following issues. Before starting to write your response, identify the one attempted.

  • 1. Do you find Beowulf in Beowulf more or less attractive than Homer’s Achilles in The Iliad and/or Odysseus in The Odyssey? [You should defend your preference by citing acts, situations, and speeches from the narratives. Form a comprehensive but concise statement of your view.]
  • 2. The pilgrimage in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales brings together all the estates of society, from the devout Knight and Prioress to the scurvy Miller and Reeve. Each character represents a type, defined primarily by his or her profession, through tellingly individual touches. Discuss.
  • 3. Define Frame Story. Focus on the frame narrative of Boccaccio’s Decameron . Review its interior stories.
  • 4. Define the Petrarchan sonnet with its characteristics. Write a critical appreciation of Petrarch’s sonnets in your text.
  • 5. Define the Shakespearean sonnet as you comment on Shakespeare’s method and style and those of Petrarch. Review Shakespeare’s sonnets in your text.
