In this research, I have chosen the topic: Pedro Paramo and Susana San Juan. This subject offers a fascinating glimpse into Mexican literature, exploring the complex characters and themes of love, death, and the supernatural intertwined in Juan Rulfo's renowned novel, Pedro Paramo. My aim was to analyze the symbolic and thematic significance of Susana San Juan, a central character, and how her story reflects broader cultural and social issues.
Juan Rulfo's Pedro Paramo is considered a cornerstone of Latin American literature, blending magical realism with noir elements. Susana San Juan is portrayed as a mysterious and tragic figure whose presence haunts the novel's narrative. According to scholar Enrique Vila-Matas, Susana embodies the idea of spiritual longing and disconnection, symbolizing the Mexican's historical and existential quest for identity (Vila-Matas, 2002). Through her character, Rulfo expresses themes of death and resurrection, as she exists in a liminal space between life and afterlife, emphasizing the fluidity of reality and memory.
