Its significance transcends various industries and business models, emphasizing the importance of coordination and integration across diverse functions such as procurement, manufacturing, logistics, and distribution. The fundamental goal of SCM is to optimize these processes to enhance customer satisfaction while reducing costs and increasing competitive advantage (Chopra & Meindl, 2016).

At its core, supply chain management directly influences operational efficiency and effectiveness in any business. For example, in manufacturing industries, SCM ensures that raw materials are procured timely, production schedules are maintained, and finished goods reach the market promptly. In retail sectors, effective supply chain management helps maintain inventory levels that meet customer demand without overstocking, thus balancing customer service and operational costs. Moreover, in service industries, SCM can improve the flow of resources and information necessary for delivering services efficiently. Furthermore, managing suppliers across multiple countries increases exposure to issues such as currency fluctuations, language barriers, and varying standards and regulations, which complicate coordination and compliance (Christopher, 2016).

Additionally, global supply chains are more vulnerable to disruptions like natural disasters, pandemics, or cyber-attacks. The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the fragility of global supply chains, causing widespread shortages and delays. The complexity of coordinating international logistics and ensuring transparency across multiple entities often leads to a lack of visibility, increasing risks of miscommunication and inefficiencies (Ivanov, 2020). Another concern is sustainability and ethical sourcing, which have become critical considerations in global SCM due to the increasing demand for environmentally friendly and socially responsible practices (Seuring & Müller, 2008). Companies must navigate these concerns while maintaining cost-effectiveness and agility in their supply chains.

While local SCM can be challenging but manageable, global supply chain management involves additional concerns that require strategic planning, risk management, and technological integration.
