The task at hand is to compose a comparative analysis of two artworks from the official collection of the Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA), focusing on works from the prehistoric to Gothic periods. This assignment aims to develop your research skills, critical observation, and formal artistic analysis, culminating in a well-structured two-page essay that adheres to MLA formatting guidelines.
Introduction
The introductory section of the essay should clearly state the selected artworks, including their titles, creators (if known), and chronological context within the prehistoric to Gothic timeline. The introduction should also establish the purpose of the comparison—highlighting similarities, differences, or thematic connections between the two works. Contextual background, such as cultural or historical significance, should be concisely summarized based on preliminary research.
Research and Description
In the research phase, gather comprehensive information about each artwork. This includes the artist's name, origin, date, materials used, and any relevant influences or stylistic movements. It is essential to explore how influences from contemporaneous or preceding cultures may have impacted the work's development. Document any distinct iconography or subject matter, especially as it pertains to the time period studied. Use reputable sources such as academic journals, museum archives, and scholarly books to ensure credibility.
Formal Analysis
Describe both artworks utilizing the elements of art—form, line, shape, color, texture, space, and composition. Analyze how these elements work together to convey meaning, mood, or cultural significance. Include discussion on artistic techniques and media, noting any unique craftsmanship, stylistic features, or symbolism embedded in the works. Also, interpret subject matter, considering cultural or religious themes prevalent during the period.
Comparison and Contrast

Contrast their differences in these aspects, exploring how each piece reflects distinct cultural values or artistic approaches from their respective periods. Discuss how formal elements and subject matter work together to produce varied aesthetic effects or interpretative possibilities.
Conclusion
