While Type 2 errors have their own risks, especially in underpowered studies, the consequences of reporting false positives—that is, asserting effects where none exist—can be more damaging, misleading subsequent research, policy, and practice.

Confidence intervals (CIs) provide a range within which the true effect size likely falls, with a specified level of confidence (usually 95%). In the context of either significance tests or effect size, I would advocate for reporting confidence intervals. They help mitigate some of the pitfalls associated with p-values, such as the binary interpretation of significance, and provide a richer understanding of the data. Particularly in cases of marginal significance or small sample sizes, confidence intervals can inform whether observed effects are meaningful or potentially due to sampling variability (Schmidt & Lohmueller, 2021).

Conclusion

While both Type 1 and Type 2 errors pose threats to research validity, a Type 1 error is generally more likely to taint research findings due to the prevalent use of significance thresholds and publication biases. Prioritizing effect size over sole reliance on p-values offers a better gauge of practical importance. Nevertheless, including confidence intervals in reporting enhances the interpretability and transparency of research findings, enabling a nuanced understanding of the data.
