The final project for this course is the creation of presentation tracing a garment over time. The final product represents an authentic demonstration of competency as students will demonstrate recognition for various garments worn during each costume period, including basic terminology, analyzing important historical impacts on the garment as well as its development over time and what traces are present in today’s fashions. The project is divided into three milestones, which will be submitted in Modules Three, Four, and Six. Your Final Project is due in Module Seven. In Task 7-2, you will submit two paragraphs describing how the garment you chose to trace has developed throughout time. Provide photos or illustrations of this progression. Discuss how the garment may appear in 20 years.

Tracing a specific garment offers insights into the historical contexts that have shaped its design, usage, and symbolic meanings. For this project, I have chosen to analyze the trench coat, a staple in outerwear fashion that originated during World War I and has since become a versatile and enduring garment. The trench coat's development highlights how functional military wear transitioned into a fashionable, civilian wardrobe essential. Over the decades, its design has evolved from the utilitarian double-breasted style with epaulets and belt to a more streamlined, minimalist silhouette, incorporating diverse fabrics and colors to suit modern tastes. The integration of new materials such as waterproof fabrics and lightweight synthetics has also enhanced its practicality while maintaining its classic appeal.
Photos and illustrations of the trench coat over different time periods vividly illustrate its transformation. Early 20th-century images depict the heavy-duty, khaki-colored coats worn by soldiers, characterized by their broad lapels, shoulder straps, and belt. Post-war fashion adopted these elements into civilian clothing, leading to the trench coat's adoption by Hollywood stars and fashion icons in the 1950s and 1960s.
