Title: The Impact of Social Media on Adolescent Mental Health
Introduction
In recent years, social media has become an integral part of daily life, especially among adolescents. Platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat provide a means for social interaction, self-expression, and entertainment. However, concerns have been raised about the potential negative effects social media may have on mental health among young people. This research proposal aims to explore the relationship between social media usage and mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem among adolescents.
Background
The proliferation of social media has transformed communication patterns among teenagers. According to the Pew Research Center (2019), 95% of teens have access to smartphones, and 89% use at least one social media site regularly. While these platforms facilitate socialization and support networks, researchers have begun to investigate their impact on mental well-being. Studies indicate that excessive social media use can contribute to feelings of inadequacy, social comparison, and cyberbullying, all of which may negatively influence mental health (Keles, McCrae, & Grealish, 2020).
The Controversy
Proponents of social media argue that these platforms serve as essential tools for maintaining social connections and providing emotional support, especially during times of crisis or isolation. They emphasize the benefits of social media in fostering community, enhancing communication skills, and enabling self-expression (Kuss & Griffiths, 2017). Conversely, critics contend that social media encourages harmful behaviors, such as social comparison and cyberbullying, which can exacerbate mental health problems among adolescents. They also cite research linking heavy social media use with increased rates of anxiety and depression (Twenge, Joiner, Rogers, & Martin, 2018).
Thesis Statement
Although social media offers valuable opportunities for social connection, its excessive use among adolescents is associated with increased risk of mental health issues, warranting further investigation and the development of effective interventions.

By systematically investigating the dual perspectives on social media's impact, this research aims to contribute meaningful insights into adolescent mental health and inform strategies for balanced social media engagement.
