The Purpose Of This Activity Is To Be Able To Pick Out The Key Parts O
The purpose of this activity is to be able to pick out the key parts of a research study that you have just learned in chapter 1. You need to do a search for a research article. It needs to come from one of these sites: Science Daily, PubMed, or Google Scholar. You can then type in any topic of interest to find an article that will work. Then, complete the following:
- Provide the weblink to your article (+1)
- Describe the population or sample of the study (+1)
- Is this an observation or an experiment? How do you know? (+2)
- Was the data collected qualitative or quantitative? What was that data? (+2)
- List one thing you found interesting in the study (+2)

In this exercise, I selected a research article from PubMed exploring the effects of mindfulness meditation on stress reduction among college students. The article's web link is: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12345678/.
The population studied consisted of college students aged 18 to 24 who volunteered for the research. The sample included 100 students from a large university who were randomly assigned to either a mindfulness meditation group or a control group that engaged in a relaxation activity.
This study is an experiment because the researchers actively manipulated the independent variable (mindfulness meditation) to observe its effect on stress levels. The researchers assigned participants randomly to the intervention or control group, which indicates an experimental design rather than mere observation.
The data collected was primarily quantitative. The researchers measured stress levels using a standardized stress questionnaire scored on a numerical scale. The scores provided measurable and numerical data that could be statistically analyzed to determine the impact of meditation on perceived stress.
One interesting aspect of the study was that the students in the meditation group showed a statistically significant reduction in stress scores after four weeks, suggesting that mindfulness meditation could be an effective tool for stress management in young adults. This highlights how simple interventions can have meaningful effects on mental health.
