The purpose of this assignment is to explore a contemporary social welfare concern (e.g., poverty, unemployment, homelessness, immigration, etc.) and analyze its historical context. Specifically, your paper should include a critical analysis of the following:

PART I: SELECTION OF A SOCIAL WELFARE POLICY CONCERN:

  1. Provide a brief overview of the social welfare policy concern, including current scope and impact. Be sure to address how issues of oppression contribute to differential impact for certain populations.

  2. Discuss why you chose this social welfare concern.

  3. Using course concepts, explain how this concern constitutes a form of injustice (e.g., human rights, economic, environmental).

  4. Trace the history of the concern as it developed. Identify the strategies and claims used to elicit public support for the issue. Who were the major players in that work? Be sure to describe the historical involvement of the social work profession, citing specific examples of how their work not only led to positive change but also exacerbated unjust conditions for vulnerable populations.

ANALYSIS:

  1. Identify at least two social welfare policies that have either contributed to the perpetuation of the social injustice or that were enacted to address the social injustice.

  2. Using a policy analysis framework, discuss potential gaps, critiques, or unintended consequences of the policies you identified.

  3. Identify communities and/or organizations that have responded to address the social injustice: and what were their responses.

  4. Explore the specific strategies and tactics used by the organization and/or community, considering gaps and critiques of these efforts (e.g., policy, advocacy, services, other).

INTERVENTION:

  1. Identify an anti-oppressive community or organizational practice opportunities for social workers to fortify, augment, or complement the current social change efforts.

This paper should be 8–10 pages, substantially integrate at least six (6) sources, including three outside sources, and adhere to proper APA formatting (7th edition). The paper must be double-spaced, using 12-point CPI font, with 1-inch margins. Include a cover page and a separate References page. Number each page.
