According to the American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics, nurses are ethically obligated not only to provide compassionate care but also to promote the integrity and positive perception of the nursing profession. This involves engaging in public education, leadership, and advocacy efforts to address health disparities and influence health care policies (American Nurses Association, 2015). The responsibilities of nurses include addressing societal issues that impact health, such as socioeconomic inequalities, access to care, and health literacy. Therefore, the nurse’s role involves fostering a positive image of nursing and making meaningful contributions beyond bedside care.
Part of understanding the public perception of nursing involves analyzing media portrayals that may distort or diminish the profession’s image. For this discussion, I selected a widely circulated video that depicts nurses as merely subordinate to doctors or as individuals solely involved in administrative tasks, neglecting their expertise and critical role in healthcare delivery. The video perpetuates stereotypes by portraying nurses as passive, secondary figures rather than as skilled professionals with autonomous decision-making capabilities. Such representations can undermine public trust and respect for nursing, influencing policy decisions and the attractiveness of the profession to prospective students. It is crucial to challenge and correct these portrayals by promoting engaging, accurate media that highlight nurses’ expertise, independence, and vital contributions to patient outcomes.
The most pressing healthcare issue in my community appears to be the rising prevalence of chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity. These conditions contribute significantly to morbidity and mortality, straining healthcare resources and increasing costs. In the United States, despite advances in medicine, health disparities and access inequities persist, affecting vulnerable populations, including racial minorities and low-income groups. Globally, the burden of infectious diseases like COVID-19, coupled with inadequate healthcare infrastructure in low- and middle-income countries, poses severe challenges. Addressing these issues requires comprehensive strategies including policy reforms, community-based interventions, and increased investment in healthcare infrastructure. Nurses play a pivotal role in these efforts through education, prevention, and coordinated care, advocating for equitable health services worldwide.
