Part I: Advocacy Letter

Research the law or policy’s main purpose, the primary population it serves, and its effects on that population. Consider how current domestic and global issues influence this law or policy and analyze community health needs data from hospital reports and local assessments to predict future advocacy needs.
Next, investigate your state legislature or U.S. Congress to determine if there are pending actions or existing policies related to your selected issue. Identify a relevant legislator representing your zip code and assess their current stance or actions concerning the issue—calling their office can be helpful. Then, craft a concise four-paragraph advocacy letter addressing the legislator. Begin by acknowledging the legislator, then present a compelling argument about the significance of the health issue locally, supported by data. Conclude by positioning yourself and your organization as an ally for policy change or support. The letter should be accurately formatted and about 500 words, with references to supporting reports and legislative resources.
Part II: Community Education
In this segment, you will analyze local community needs by researching two government agencies unrelated to your final project agency. Conduct a SWOT analysis for each, focusing on how they manage communicable diseases and chronic illnesses, including vaccination programs. Choose agencies such as homeless shelters, senior centers, schools, or community clinics. Prepare questions and methods to collect data from these agencies, evaluating internal strengths and weaknesses, as well as external threats and opportunities. Summarize each SWOT analysis in approximately 350 words.
Then, select one community agency where you might implement an educational health project. Conduct a SWOT analysis for this agency as well and write a 350-word summary. Based on the public health issues faced, identify one key problem or issue and outline how the agency could address it. Develop a detailed 500-word outline for a disease prevention education project suitable for this agency—focusing on issues such as communicable diseases or chronic conditions—and propose how this project could help improve community health outcomes. This project will be developed further in subsequent weeks.
Overall, these activities aim to enhance your skills in policy advocacy, community assessment, and health education planning within a public health context.
