The first area of interest I wish to explore in social work is the impact of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) on siblings. Growing up with a sibling who has autism can significantly influence the emotional, social, and developmental experiences of typically developing siblings (Meyer et al., 2018). Understanding these dynamics can inform interventions aimed at supporting family resilience and sibling well-being. Research has shown that siblings may experience a range of feelings, from empathy and responsibility to stress and frustration, making it essential to develop strategies that foster positive sibling relationships and mental health outcomes (Meyer et al., 2018).
The second topic I am interested in is the relationship between prolonged infertility and mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. Infertility affects approximately 10-15% of couples worldwide and can lead to significant psychological distress, often comparable to the distress experienced by individuals with major depressive disorder (Greil et al., 2010). Exploring this connection can help social workers better support clients undergoing fertility treatments by addressing the emotional toll and providing targeted coping strategies. It is crucial to understand both the emotional burden and the social implications of infertility to develop comprehensive support programs (Greil et al., 2010).
My third research interest revolves around the accessibility of mental health services for marginalized populations, particularly low-income communities and racial minorities. These groups often face barriers such as stigma, lack of insurance, and geographic disparities, which hinder their ability to access necessary mental health care (Alegría et al., 2010). Investigating the structural and societal factors influencing service utilization can guide social workers in advocating for policy changes and developing culturally competent interventions. Ensuring equitable access to mental health resources is vital for reducing disparities and promoting community well-being (Alegría et al., 2010).
