This Assignment Will Allow You To Demonstrate The Following Objectives

This assignment will allow you to demonstrate the following objectives: assess the fundamental science and engineering principles of solid waste management, examine the impact of solid waste on human populations. Instructions: This assignment will allow you to understand the volume of non-hazardous waste that is generated by small businesses and residential homes. A portion will go to the landfill, and a portion will go into recycling programs for reuse or for repurposing. Being able to calculate these are important for estimating the size of facilities handling this wastes and of the equipment and personnel required to collect and transport these wastes from point of generation to final disposition. Answer the questions directly on this document. When you are finished, select “Save As,” and save the document using this format: Student ID_Unit# (ex. _UnitI). Upload this document to BlackBoard as a .doc, .docx, or .rtf file. The specified word count is given for each question. At a minimum, you must use your textbook as a resource for these questions. Other sources may be used as needed. All material from outside sources (including your textbook) must be cited and referenced in APA format. Please include a reference list after each question.

Paper For Above instruction

Question 1: Waste Collection and Disposal Calculations

A front loader garbage truck with a capacity of 40 cubic yards collects municipal solid waste weekly from dumpster bins at apartment complexes. The waste in the truck is compacted to 750 pounds per cubic yard, and the uncompacted waste in each dumpster is 175 pounds per cubic yard.

a) How many full dumpster bins, each with a 3 cubic yard capacity, can be placed into the garbage truck?

b) If the apartment complex employs a mandatory recycling program and each resident disposes of only 4 pounds of trash daily, how many residents can the garbage truck serve before reaching capacity?

c) If each resident disposes of only 3.5 pounds of trash daily under the same recycling policy, how many additional residents can the truck serve before it is full?

Note: Show all your calculations clearly for each part.

Question 2: Municipal Recycling Program Enhancement

A municipal government seeks guidance on improving its recycling program. Using data from Table on p. 65 of the textbook, identify three key focus areas to enhance the program, providing rationale for each. Discuss how these initiatives would influence the municipality's population, considering factors such as environmental health, economic benefits, and public participation. In your response, consider how waste diversion impacts municipal sustainability and quality of life. (Minimum 200 words)

Question 3: Environmental Impact of Metals in Mobile Phones

Mobile phones contain approximately 15.5% copper, with nickel and silver comprising about 2.5%, collectively representing 83% of the potential toxicity of the device's components, as shown on p. 66, Fig. .

Describe how copper is toxic to the environment and analyze how this toxicity can affect local residents. Include discussion on how copper leaching into soil and water sources can impact ecosystems and human health. Consider bioaccumulation and toxicity to aquatic life, as well as potential indirect effects on human populations residing near electronic waste recycling or disposal sites.

(Minimum 200 words)

Question 4: Components of Integrated Solid Waste Management

Describe the elements of the Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) program, including waste reduction, reuse, recycling, waste treatment, and disposal. Provide a detailed discussion on which element holds the greatest potential to influence the overall success of the program, supporting your reasoning with scientific and engineering principles involved.

Explain how principles such as material flow analysis, life-cycle assessment, and engineering design inform effective waste management practices. Discuss the roles of technology, policy, and community participation in enhancing program outcomes. Conclude with an evaluation of how these elements synergize to create sustainable waste management solutions, highlighting the element with the highest impact.
