The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), enacted in 1996, has significantly shaped the management and security of patients’ medical records. Its primary importance lies in establishing standards for the confidentiality, integrity, and privacy of health information (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, 2020). HIPAA's Privacy Rule grants patients control over their health data, fostering trust between patients and providers. It also facilitates data sharing for treatment while protecting against unauthorized disclosures. The overall impact includes heightened security protocols and mandatory training for healthcare staff to safeguard sensitive information, which reduces data breaches and errors. To improve data quality and minimize errors, healthcare administrations should implement comprehensive staff training on data entry and management, as well as utilize advanced electronic health record (EHR) systems with real-time validation features. For example, integrating automated alerts for duplicate or inconsistent entries can prevent medication errors caused by data inaccuracies (Burgess et al., 2021). Ensuring continuous staff education and adopting technological solutions are critical steps toward enhancing data integrity in healthcare settings.
