BARNES JEWISH HOSPITAL – Patient Registrar in Radiation Oncology/Proton Therapy Internship

In this internship, I performed a variety of clerical tasks essential to processing patients for radiation appointments, including interviewing and registering patients with compassion, which involved interacting closely with patients and their families. I saw patients in the clinic who were candidates for radiation therapy and collaborated with psychiatrists to understand techniques to help patients relax, gaining insight into the psychosocial aspects of cancer treatment.

I learned about new treatment modalities and the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to cancer care. Interaction with families often involved assisting them with arrangements such as placement accommodations during their loved ones’ hospital stays. I became proficient in hospital registration systems and multiple ancillary computer systems, including Soarian, Aria, and Outlook, performing tasks such as verifying insurance eligibility, scanning, and retrieving documents.

My role also involved working closely with social workers, who are vital for addressing the psychosocial needs of patients and their families. This experience enhanced my understanding of the coordination required within an oncology team and the importance of holistic patient care.
