The goal is to extend course material into practical application, focusing on designing a network for either home broadband access using cable, DSL, or wireless technologies, or a LAN setup within a small office environment. The paper should include comprehensive descriptions of the network components, how they operate, and their interaction within the overall network design.

Students must choose one of two problems: the broadband access solution (Problem 1) or the small office LAN (Problem 2). For Problem 1, the paper must describe the connection from a desktop PC with Windows 7 or later to the ISP, including hardware, media, transmission protocols, and network architecture. For DSL connections, detailed explanation of the point from the PC to the DSLAM is required. For cable or wireless options, an overview of their respective networks should be included.

For Problem 2, the focus is on designing a LAN for a small office, including components such as switches, routers, and cabling, and explaining how these elements interconnect and facilitate communication with Internet Service Providers. When applicable, the choice of vendor hardware, such as a DSLAM or LAN switches, should be justified and described in detail.

The paper will be graded based on introduction, overall design, hardware details, transmission media, protocol explanations, lessons learned, quality of writing, length, and references.
