1 To what extent is the administrative model at your agency egalitarian and informal on one hand, or bureaucratically stratified and formal on the other?
The administrative model at my agency tends to lean towards a bureaucratically stratified and formal structure, though it incorporates elements of informality in certain areas. According to Meier and O'Toole (2021), public agencies often balance formal procedures with informal, interpersonal dynamics to facilitate efficient governance. In my experience, decision-making processes are typically structured with clear hierarchies, but there are instances where informal interactions help expedite communication and problem-solving, especially among mid-level staff. This hybrid approach allows the agency to maintain accountability while fostering some degree of flexibility, though the formal, hierarchical nature generally dominates.
2 Have you had an opportunity to interact in any manner with the CEO of the agency? How has that experience been?
Yes, I have had the opportunity to interact with the CEO of my agency during several meetings and informal gatherings. The experience has been insightful and somewhat revealing of the leadership style within the organization. According to Fernandez and Rainey (2010), open interactions with top management can enhance understanding of organizational priorities and decision-making processes. My interactions have been positive; the CEO is approachable and willing to listen, which fosters a culture of openness and transparency. Such engagements have provided me with a clearer understanding of the agency’s strategic goals and the leadership’s emphasis on accountability and stakeholder engagement.
3 Have you been able to interact with or observe the governing body of the agency (i.e., the Board of Directors or Trustees)? How has that experience been? If not, how would you see this as a valuable learning experience?
I have observed meetings of the governing body, although I have not interacted directly with Board members. Observing these meetings has been enlightening, illustrating the formal procedures and deliberative processes that guide high-level decision-making. According to Bøes and Rasmuson (2017), governing bodies play a crucial role in oversight and setting strategic directions. Witnessing this process has underscored the importance of governance frameworks, transparency, and accountability in public agencies. If given the opportunity for direct interaction, I believe it would be an invaluable learning experience, providing deeper insights into the political and strategic dimensions of agency management, as well as the challenges of balancing diverse stakeholder interests.
