Consider the different teams presented in your reading assignment. How do the teams manage their team boundaries? What are the trade-offs between internal cohesion and external ties within each type of team? Support your discussion with at least two (2) external sources.

Reflect on the list of common roles for team members and identify which role you believe you play in your own team or group. Explain why you see yourself fitting into this role based on your experiences and skills.

Effective management of team boundaries is crucial in fostering productive teamwork. Teams utilize boundaries to delineate roles, responsibilities, and scope, ensuring members understand their limits and contributions. According to Tuckman’s (1965) model of team development, clear boundaries facilitate cohesion during the forming and storming stages, but overly rigid boundaries may hinder external collaboration. Conversely, flexible boundaries allow teams to engage with external stakeholders, gaining diverse resources and perspectives, which can enhance innovation and adaptability (Gersick, 1988). However, this flexibility may come at the expense of internal cohesion, potentially leading to conflicts or lack of unity.

In tightly bound teams, such as project teams within an organization, cohesion is prioritized to achieve specific goals efficiently. These teams often emphasize internal bonds but may struggle with external integration, limiting their adaptability in complex environments. In contrast, loosely bound teams, such as interdisciplinary collaborations, rely heavily on external ties, which diversify input but risk diluting internal cohesion (Mohr & Reinhaut, 2014). The trade-off lies in balancing internal solidarity with external engagement—too much internal cohesion may inhibit flexibility, while excessive external ties may weaken team identity.

Regarding team roles, I believe I primarily serve as a coordinator or facilitator in group settings. I tend to organize tasks, promote communication, and ensure everyone’s voice is heard. This role aligns with my strengths in leadership and conflict resolution, helping the team stay focused and collaborative. My ability to coordinate aligns with findings by Belbin (2010), suggesting that effective teamwork depends substantially on individuals who can harmonize diverse roles and build consensus.
