Technology in the classroom has transformed educational practices by providing innovative means to enhance learning, engage students, and foster critical thinking. However, its misuse, overuse, and underuse can significantly impact the level of rigor and challenge in educational settings. Misuse of technology occurs when digital tools are employed inappropriately, for example, relying excessively on passive activities like watching videos or screen time that replace active learning, which diminishes academic challenge and critical engagement (Ertmer & Ottenbreit-Leftwich, 2013). Overusing technology can lead to dependency, reducing students’ problem-solving skills and independent thinking, as they become accustomed to guided or scaffolded activities rather than challenging themselves through complex tasks. Conversely, underusing technology results in missed opportunities to diversify instructional strategies, thus limiting students' exposure to challenging, real-world applications that promote higher-order thinking. Proper integration requires a delicate balance to ensure tech tools augment rigor without overshadowing foundational learning objectives.
After researching various technological tools, I plan to implement interactive whiteboards (IWBs) in my classroom. These devices offer versatile functionalities such as multimedia presentations, interactive activities, and real-time assessments, which can significantly elevate student engagement and understanding of complex concepts. Preparing for this implementation involves several steps, including securing funding through grants or school budgets, purchasing necessary supplies like compatible projectors and digital pens, and ensuring reliable internet connectivity. Additionally, professional development is essential to familiarize myself with the IWB’s features and integrate its use effectively into lesson planning. Collaborating with tech specialists and attending training sessions will be crucial to maximize the benefits of this technology and create a dynamic, challenging learning environment for students (Higgins, Beauchamp, & Miller, 2017).
