Effective leadership and influence are essential components of achieving organizational and personal goals. My specific goal is to increase team engagement and commitment to successfully implement a new project management system within my organization. This initiative aims to streamline processes, improve productivity, and foster a culture of continuous improvement. To accomplish this, enhancing my personal power and influence over team members and stakeholders is critical. Drawing from DuBrin’s (2019) Influence Tactics Table 8-1, I selected two influence tactics: "Rational Persuasion" and "Inspirational Appeals." Additionally, self-assessment tools—Quiz 8-1 and Quiz 8-2—helped evaluate my current influence and ingratiation behaviors, revealing opportunities for development.
Rational persuasion involves logical reasoning and factual evidence to convince others. I recognize that authentic rapport enhances influence more sustainably than ingratiating behaviors. Therefore, I aim to improve my listening skills, show genuine appreciation, and build interpersonal trust, aligning with findings by Northouse (2021) that authentic influence relies on relationship quality.
Two development opportunities are apparent. First, I will focus on enhancing my emotional intelligence, especially empathy and social skills, which are foundational to effective influence (Goleman, 2018). Second, I will work on expanding my knowledge of influential communication styles, like storytelling and motivational speaking, to better craft inspiring appeals. Based on research and self-assessment, I recommend specific actions to improve influence: engaging in active listening exercises, attending communication and leadership workshops, seeking mentorship to refine influence tactics, and practicing authentic relationship building. Developing emotional intelligence will foster trust and credibility, thereby increasing my personal power. Additionally, regularly practicing these skills in real-world settings will reinforce improvements and demonstrate tangible progress.
