The company I selected for my course project is Russell Stover, one of the most renowned chocolate manufacturers in the United States. Its acquisition by Lindt & Sprüngli in 2014 significantly strengthened its presence in the North American market. Lindt & Sprüngli employs the EcoVadis approach to evaluate the sustainability performance of both direct and indirect suppliers across their main subsidiaries, covering 13 entities. In 2022, the scope of supplier assessments expanded from 466 to 581, representing 52% of the group's total expenditure.
The EcoVadis evaluation framework relies on 21 criteria distributed across four critical areas: the environment, labor and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement. This approach considers various factors, including material industry concerns, the risk level of the supplier's country, supplier size, and geographical scope. Suppliers rated below 45 are subject to annual corrective action requests and reassessments, emphasizing the importance of continuous improvement. Every supplier receives a tailored corrective action plan that clarifies expectations for each criterion, complemented by training and support through the EcoVadis Academy.
