Listening and Speaking
ELP Standard: "The student listens attentively during discussions, demonstrations, and oral presentations, demonstrating comprehension through appropriate responses." (OELAS, 2023)
Correlating Language Arts/ Common Core Standard: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.K.1 - "Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about kindergarten topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups." (CCSS, 2010)
Teaching Activity: To develop listening and speaking skills, I would implement a group discussion activity where students listen carefully to a story or presentation and then retell the key points in their own words. This activity promotes active listening, comprehension, and verbal expression. For example, after reading a story, students can engage in a “story retell” circle, where each student summarizes a part of the story, fostering both listening and speaking competencies.

ELP Standard: "The student demonstrates comprehension of grade-level text through various strategies such as predicting, questioning, and summarizing." (OELAS, 2023)
Correlating Language Arts/ Common Core Standard: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.4.1 - "Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences." (CCSS, 2010)
Teaching Activity: A beneficial activity would involve guiding students through a close reading of a selected passage. Students will annotate the text, annotate queries or predictions, and then discuss their insights. This could be structured as a "text analysis" group activity, where students identify explicit details and make inferences, deepening comprehension and analytical skills.
Writing
ELP Standard: "The student writes coherent texts that develop a topic with supporting evidence and appropriate formatting." (OELAS, 2023)
Correlating Language Arts/ Common Core Standard: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.4.2 - "Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly." (CCSS, 2010)
Teaching Activity: To enhance writing skills, students can create an informative report or essay on a familiar topic, such as "My Favorite Animal." Students will plan their writing using outlines, include supporting details, and practice editing for coherence and clarity. This activity encourages organized writing and evidence-based explanations, aligned with grade-level standards.
