Virginia Tech’s motto is " Ut Prosim " which means ' That I May Serve '
In alignment with Virginia Tech’s motto, "Ut Prosim," which translates to "That I May Serve," I have dedicated myself to community service through various volunteer activities that help enrich my community and support those in need. My involvement primarily centers on volunteering with LEVOC Family Services, an organization committed to supporting African American school-aged children diagnosed with mental health conditions. Since July 2019, I have actively participated in numerous community initiatives, including trunk-or-treat events, holiday coat and toy drives, back-to-school supplies distribution, and charitable food assistance during Thanksgiving, where I helped distribute turkeys to families and aid local churches. These activities symbolize my commitment to service, driven by my desire to create a positive impact on my community and to foster a supportive environment for vulnerable populations.
My role within LEVOC Family Services has involved not only providing direct service but also contributing my time and talents to organize and implement community outreach programs. I have worked closely with fellow volunteers and community members, aiming to influence others toward compassionate action and collective well-being. These experiences have deepened my understanding of community needs and have strengthened my leadership skills, as I often take the initiative in planning activities and motivating others to participate. My ongoing involvement has allowed me to see the tangible benefits of service, including increased community cohesion and improved access to resources for underserved populations.
Regarding experiences with discrimination, I have not personally witnessed acts of discrimination but am deeply troubled by its prevalence in society. I observe that despite laws against discrimination, societal acceptance remains problematic, as some individuals or groups attempt to counteract legislative protections through the creation of laws that may inadvertently facilitate discriminatory practices. This awareness has heightened my sensitivity to social justice issues and reinforces my commitment to advocacy and equality. I believe that ongoing dialogue and education are essential to challenging discriminatory attitudes and fostering a more inclusive community. While I have not responded to specific acts of discrimination firsthand, I am committed to maintaining awareness and standing for fairness and respect in all interactions.
In terms of leadership and influence, I have made a meaningful impact through my role as a Level 2 Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). I have taken on responsibilities supporting Level 1 EMT students by preparing them to become future EMTs. My duties include assisting with medical skills training, studying together for quizzes and exams, and planning Sunday sessions to prepare for state certification boards. One of the significant obstacles I encountered involved balancing the teaching process with ensuring student understanding of complex medical skills. To address this, I engaged in open communication, discussed concerns with peers and instructors, and proposed practical solutions that aligned with best practices. This collaborative approach helped us overcome challenges and ensured that students gained confidence and competence. Looking back, I would focus more on individualized support to address diverse learning needs, which could further improve outcomes.
Personally, I have set an academic goal to graduate high school with a 4.0 GPA. This goal reflects my dedication to academic excellence and my aspiration to qualify for college scholarships and opportunities. My motivation stems from a desire to demonstrate my hard work and commitment to education. I have sought guidance from my parents and friends, whose encouragement has been instrumental in maintaining my motivation. Their support has reinforced my understanding that perseverance, focused effort, and strategic planning are key to achieving my academic ambitions. Currently, I hold a 3.83 GPA, and I am continually working towards straight A's each semester. I recognize that consistent effort and time management are crucial to reaching my goal, and I am committed to this journey, knowing that academic achievement will open doors to future success.

This insight has broadened my perspective on social justice and the importance of advocacy and education to combat discrimination. I believe that awareness, empathy, and proactive efforts are key components of fostering a more inclusive society. While I have not responded directly to acts of discrimination, I strive to stand against injustice through everyday actions and by supporting equitable practices.
As a Level 2 Emergency Medical Technician, I have had the opportunity to influence others significantly. I assist with the training of upcoming EMTs by helping them develop necessary medical skills, preparing for certification, and working collaboratively with instructors. One challenge we faced was balancing the instructional curriculum with the varying learning needs of students. To overcome this obstacle, I engaged in open dialogue with peers, suggested practical modifications to the training approach, and followed through with implementing best practices. These efforts contributed to a smoother training process and better preparedness for the students.
