Comprehending and applying statistics is essential in the nursing profession for a variety of reasons, such as evidence-based practice (EBP), improvement of patient results as well as helping to make logical decisions in regard to healthcare policy and education. It is important for every nurse to be able to understand and interpret the statistical reports that are conducted in practice and this must be put into consideration for the different types of data and statistics that are being used. One reason that nurses need to understand statistics is that statistical information is essential to understanding the research findings that are relevant to patient care.
Nurses frequently need to assess the relationship of study results to their practice. To be able to determine the importance of the results of a research study, nurses need to have a basic understanding of statistical measures such as p-values, confidence intervals, and effect sizes. This knowledge permits nurses to critically appraise the literature for use in practice, to gauge the rigor and trustworthiness of research studies, and to generalize and apply the findings to patient care (Polit & Beck, 2020). Furthermore, statistics are also crucial in evidence-based practice (EBP), which is the conscientious use of current best evidence in making decisions about patient care. EBP integrates clinical expertise with the best available evidence and patient preferences and values.
Without a knowledge of statistics, nurses may have a harder time evaluating the evidence required to support quality clinical decisions (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2018). Statistical analysis is essential in patient care. For instance, in quality improvement initiatives, nurses collect the fall rates and perform statistical analysis to provide interventions to reduce the fall rates. Reasoning statistical analysis is vital for nurses to recognize patterns, determine the effectiveness interventions, and make data-based decisions to improve patient safety and the quality of care. With quantitative statistical competence, nurses in public health and policy could engage in community health assessments, understand health trends and use population data to contribute to the development of healthcare policy.
This includes critically analyzing and interpreting health information that informs practice, at both the individual patient and population-based public health levels. Statistics also play a role in patient education. Nurses often educate patients regarding their health conditions, treatment plans, and probable prognosis, all of which may require the interpretation of statistical information scores. In summary, being well-versed in statistics is critical for nursing practice. It’s the basis of evidence-based practice and improves the quality of care patients receive, it helps to inform health policy, & supports patient education endeavors.

We know that statistical aid in how data is collected and interpreted, analyzing it in a positive or negative way, is essential for the profession in decision-making always aimed at our patients. One of the benefits from statistics in the daily practice of nursing gives us the advantage of how to use the study results, interpret data found and how to apply in the medical field to be used and applied to our patients.
These investigative studies guide and provide much information within the parameters of validity, reliability, always based on evidence and previous experience. It is noteworthy that over time, advances have been made through statistical research widely used in nursing, allowing visionary nurses to promote improvements in the individualized care of our patients and their health benefits.

We can also note that monitoring laboratories, vital signs, response to medications, behavior patterns, among others, can be of great importance in individual management, or with studied general patterns, we can compare and provide the best care.
