Week 3 Nursing Theorist Video Reflection
Week 3 Nursing Theorist Video Reflection
During Weeks 3 and 6, you will complete a nursing theorist video analysis/reflection of one of the nursing theorist videos provided in the course. We highly recommend that you watch as many of these videos as you can throughout the course. This is a great opportunity for you to see and hear directly from the actual theorists that you are reading about in the text. Click on the Nursing Theorist Video Link in the main menu on the left to see the collection of videos. After watching one of the theorist videos, reflect about what you have learned.
Compose a paper that addresses the following: Explain why you chose to watch this particular theorist’s video. Describe the parts of your personal philosophy where you agree or disagree with this theorist. Is there anything that surprised you in the video? If so, what surprised you? Would you recommend this video to another student? If so, why would you recommend it? What value did you receive from watching it? Your paper should be 2–3 pages in length, in APA format, typed in Times New Roman with 12-point font, and double-spaced with 1" margins. If outside sources are used, they must be cited appropriately.
Paper For Above instruction
The selection of a particular nursing theorist’s video for reflection offers an excellent opportunity to engage deeply with the foundational philosophies that underpin the discipline of nursing. For my reflection, I chose to watch the video about Dorothea Orem, whose Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory has significantly influenced modern nursing practice. My decision was driven by an interest in understanding how theories of human needs and self-care empower nurses to foster patient independence. Watching Orem speak about her theory provided valuable insights that resonated with my personal nursing philosophy, which emphasizes patient-centered care and holistic health promotion.
Orem’s focus on the importance of self-care aligns closely with my belief that patients should be empowered to participate actively in their health management. Her theory underscores the importance of educating and supporting patients to perform self-care activities, thereby promoting autonomy and improving health outcomes. I agree with her assertion that nursing should function as a facilitative role, guiding patients toward health maintenance and recovery. However, I also recognized areas of divergence; for instance, my approach sometimes involves more interventionist strategies when patients are unable to perform self-care, whereas Orem’s model emphasizes patient independence that may require gradual support.
What surprised me most during the video was Orem’s emphasis on the intrinsic motivation of patients to care for themselves and her belief that nurses must carefully assess individual self-care capacities. Her dedication to the development of nursing as a unique profession grounded in theory was compelling. It was inspiring to see how she articulated the importance of nursing as an empowering force rather than merely a technical or task-oriented profession.
I would definitely recommend this video to other students because it offers a clear understanding of how theory informs practice. The emphasis on patient empowerment aligns with contemporary trends in healthcare that prioritize patient engagement, shared decision-making, and holistic care. Watching Orem speak about her theory helped me appreciate the philosophical underpinnings of nursing and its evolution toward promoting independence and self-care. The value I received from the video was a reinforced understanding of self-care as a core component of nursing practice, along with a renewed motivation to incorporate these principles into my future practice.
