Week 5 Discussion Continuous Improvement
During the previous weeks, you have developed your public speaking skills. As you evaluate your progress at midterm, which one of the skills below do you plan to further develop during the remainder of the term? Thoroughly explain why you selected this skill and share specific actions you will take to further develop it. Actively listening. Conducting research. Creating an outline. Respond to at least one of your peers. Typically, a substantial post consists of 5-7 sentences and a peer response with 2-4 complete sentences. A substantial discussion forum response should make connections to course content, professional experiences, and personal experiences. Optional: Continue to hone your oral communication skills by submitting your discussion response as a 1-2 minute video or audio recording. Throughout the progression of the public speaking course, students have the opportunity to develop and refine a variety of essential communication skills. As midterm approaches, it is an opportune moment to reflect upon individual growth and identify specific areas for further improvement. Among the skills listed—actively listening, conducting research, and creating an outline—actively listening stands out as a crucial focus for continued development. A commitment to enhancing active listening skills can significantly impact overall communication effectiveness, both within the context of public speaking and in broader professional and personal interactions.
Active listening involves fully concentrating, understanding, responding to, and remembering what is being said. It is a foundational component of effective communication because it fosters mutual understanding and respect. For public speakers, active listening is essential not only for engaging audiences but also for responding aptly to questions and feedback during presentations. It enables speakers to tailor their messages based on audience reactions, ensuring that the communication remains relevant and impactful. Additionally, active listening helps in identifying the underlying needs or concerns of an audience, which is vital for creating persuasive and empathetic speeches.
To further develop active listening skills, I plan to incorporate specific strategies into my practice. Firstly, I intend to practice mindful listening during conversations by giving my full attention to the speaker, avoiding distractions, and refraining from interrupting. This discipline increases my ability to absorb and interpret verbal and non-verbal cues accurately. Secondly, I aim to enhance my note-taking skills during interactions, capturing key points that can be revisited later, thereby reinforcing understanding and retention. Furthermore, I will seek feedback from peers and instructors about my listening skills and actively work on areas of improvement identified through their observations.
Another approach involves participating in exercises or workshops focused on active listening techniques, such as paraphrasing or summarizing what the speaker has said to ensure comprehension. These exercises can be incorporated into classroom activities or informal conversations. Additionally, I might record my interactions to review and evaluate my listening behavior critically.
