Public relations (PR) is a strategic communication process that builds mutual understanding between an organization and its publics to foster a positive image, manage perceptions, and maintain favorable relationships. The primary goal of PR is to create a favorable environment for an organization by managing its reputation, handling crises, communicating with stakeholders, and promoting its messages through various media channels.
A good example of a PR move is when a company publicly acknowledges a mistake transparently and takes steps to rectify it. For example, when Johnson & Johnson responded swiftly and transparently to the Tylenol cyanide crisis in 1982, it restored public trust by recalling contaminated products, cooperating with authorities, and communicating openly with consumers. This proactive approach demonstrated corporate responsibility and helped recover their reputation.
Conversely, a bad PR move occurs when an organization mismanages a crisis or responds insensitively. An example is United Airlines’ handling of the 2017 incident where a passenger was forcibly removed from a flight. The company's initial response was perceived as dismissive and lacked empathy, leading to widespread backlash and damage to their reputation. Poor crisis management or insensitivity can exacerbate a crisis and lead to long-term reputational harm.
On a typical day, a public relations professional might conduct media outreach by pitching stories to journalists, respond to media inquiries, prepare press releases, organize press conferences or events, monitor media coverage, manage social media accounts, and develop communication strategies. They also analyze public opinion, handle crisis communication, and maintain relationships with stakeholders including customers, investors, and the community. Their tasks vary depending on their organization’s needs and current circumstances.
This course offers an opportunity to deepen understanding of public relations, and I am particularly interested in exploring areas such as entertainment PR and corporate communication. I would like to learn more about how organizations craft their messages, handle reputation management, and develop crisis communication strategies. Gaining insight into these areas is crucial for my career aspirations of working in strategic communication or corporate PR.
After graduation, my goal is to pursue a career in public relations, ideally within the entertainment industry or corporate sector. I aim to develop skills in media relations, strategic communication, and crisis management to help organizations build strong relationships with their audiences. I am particularly passionate about storytelling and image management, and I seek to become a professional who can effectively shape public perception and build positive relationships between organizations and their publics.
Additional information about me includes my current location and academic background. I am an online student based in Hong Kong, with limited access to physical resources but a strong interest in media and communication. Due to living in a remote area, my internet connection can sometimes be unreliable, so I appreciate flexibility and patience.
