The Department of Justice (DOJ) plays a critical role in upholding law, order, and justice within the United States. One of the top priorities for the DOJ should be enhancing efforts to combat child exploitation and child pornography, especially given the increasing prevalence of these crimes facilitated by the Internet. Protecting vulnerable children from online predators is a pressing concern, and the DOJ must allocate resources and develop strategic initiatives to detect, prevent, and prosecute such offenses effectively.
Currently, the DOJ has implemented various efforts, such as specialized cybercrime units, collaboration with internet service providers (ISPs), and international partnerships to track and dismantle online child exploitation networks (Finkelhor et al., 2020). However, these efforts can be further improved by investing in advanced technological tools like artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms that can detect and flag illicit content at an unprecedented scale and speed (Yuan et al., 2022). Additionally, increasing training for law enforcement officers to better understand the digital landscape and online grooming tactics can enhance the effectiveness of investigations (Wurtele & Wyckoff, 2017). Better public awareness campaigns could also help in reducing the availability of online child pornography by encouraging community vigilance and responsible internet usage.
The role of the Internet significantly exacerbates the problem of child pornography because it provides an anonymous and global platform for offenders to share content without fear of immediate detection. The rampant rise of encrypted messaging apps, peer-to-peer networks, and dark web sites makes monitoring and infiltrating these illicit spaces more complex (Bouchard et al., 2019). Furthermore, online content can be easily redistributed across networks, making the detection and removal of illegal material challenging. The Internet's vast scale and technological sophistication enable offenders to quickly adapt to law enforcement strategies, complicating efforts to suppress such content (Lehmiller et al., 2019). Therefore, combating online child pornography requires a combination of technological innovation, international cooperation, and legislative measures to effectively reduce its proliferation and protect children globally.
