Throughout this course, my understanding of cancer as a pressing public health issue has deepened significantly. Initially, I viewed cancer primarily as a serious medical condition affecting individuals; however, through extensive research, I have come to appreciate its broader implications, including societal and economic burdens. The research revealed that cancer is not only prevalent but also influenced by various factors such as genetics, lifestyle choices, and environmental exposures, which underscores the importance of preventive health measures.

Feedback from my instructor and peers has been instrumental in shaping my perspective. Discussions highlighted the significance of early detection and the role of community-based interventions in reducing cancer incidence. Community feedback pointed out that disparities in healthcare access often create barriers for vulnerable populations, making prevention and treatment more challenging for certain groups. This was an eye-opener, revealing systemic issues that I had not considered initially.

Unexpected barriers include the high costs associated with cancer treatment, which can be prohibitive for many individuals, and limitations in healthcare infrastructure, especially in underserved areas. These barriers emphasize the necessity for policies that address healthcare inequities and improve access to preventive services. Interestingly, I found that some cancer prevention programs, such as vaccination initiatives for HPV, have shown promise in lowering certain cancer rates more effectively than I anticipated.

If given the chance to choose again, I would still focus on cancer, given its multifaceted impact on public health. The knowledge gained during this course has reinforced my interest in contributing to strategies that promote early detection and equitable healthcare access, making this a profoundly meaningful area of study and advocacy.
