The chosen disorder for this discussion is Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), classified under dissociative disorders in the DSM-5-TR. DID is characterized by the presence of two or more distinct personality states or identities that recurrently take control of an individual's behavior (American Psychiatric Association, 2022). The diagnostic criteria include: the disruption of identity characterized by two or more distinct personality states; recurrent gaps in memory concerning personal events, everyday activities, and trauma experiences; substantial distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning; and the symptoms are not attributable to substance use or other medical conditions (American Psychiatric Association, 2022). Individuals with DID often experience dissociative amnesia, depersonalization, and derealization, especially during transitions between identities.
A best-practice intervention for DID is individual psychotherapy focusing on integrating the separate identities and addressing traumatic memories. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) are commonly used modalities. EMDR, in particular, has shown effectiveness in helping clients process traumatic memories contributing to dissociative symptoms (Shapiro, 2018).
